Cyclones Down Bearcats for Big 12 Win

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-14, 1-9 Big 12) knocks off Cincinnati (7-10, 1-9 Big 12) to get its first Big 12 victory of the season, 4-2. Freshman Valentina Vargas earned the clincher on Court 6.

In doubles, the Cyclones quickly claimed the advantage when Julia Camblor and Stanislava Shulzhenko posted a 6-2 victory on Court 2. But the Bearcats came from behind on Courts 1 and 3 to take the doubles point.

In singles, the Cyclones quickly got control of the match back. Camblor defeated Ana Arsic, 6-0, 6-3 in just 52 minutes on Court 4 to tie the match at 1-a-piece. Alicia Dale followed up Camblor's victory with a win of her own over Tara Kurepa, 6-1, 6-3, to give the Cyclones the lead. Shulzhenko followed Dale close behind by beating Sara Watanabe, 6-2, 6-1.

After a Bearcat victory on Court 2, the match came down to a pair of final sets from Vargas and Mari Paz Alberto Vilar. The Freshman Vargas delivered by going perfect in the final set to take down Milica Popovski and clinch Iowa State's first conference victory of the year.

The Cyclones will be back in action on Sunday in their home finale against West Virginia at Noon.
