COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Iowa State men's golf team tied their best finish of the season, finishing in 2nd place at the Tiger Collegiate Invitational. Iowa State shot a 282-277-281=840 (E) and had two Cyclones place inside the top-10. ISU's second round score of 277 is the third-lowest round of the year, and their 54-hole score of 840 is the second-lowest of the season and ties the 12th-lowest in school history. The Cyclones finished seven strokes behind host Missouri for the team crown, and the Tigers' Veikka Viskari maintained his lead from yesterday to win the individual race at six-under.
Zach May finishes tied for 3rd at three-under par, his third top-3 finish this season and fifth of his career. The senior carded a season-low 54-hole score of 207, the second-lowest of his career (206). All of May's rounds were par or better, including back-to-back rounds in the 60's to end the tournament. May tied for third in Par 3 scoring (-1) and tied for eighth in Par 4 scoring (-1), as well as firing a tournament-leading 14 birdies. Paul Beauvy carded a 68 and a 69 in the final two rounds to jump 30 spots from yesterday and tie for 7th (E). Beauvy has now finished in the top-10 five times this season (15 on his career) to go along with 11 rounds in the 60's on the year (31 times in his career). Beauvy also tied the eighth lowest score on Par 4's and carded eight birdies.
Dianchao Wu carded a season-low 69 in the second round, tying the second-lowest round of his career to tie for 24th (+5), tying his best finish as a Cyclone. Wu's 54-hole score of 215 ties the lowest in his career, and he totaled four birdies in the tournament. Owen Sawyer also tied for 24th, tallying seven birdies and his tenth career eagle in the first round.
Jackson McCommon shot even-par in both the first and third rounds, jumping 20 spots to tie for 59th (+10). McCommon has now carded 10 rounds that are par or better on the season, as well as surpassing the 150-birdie mark in his career with five birdies the last two days. Playing as an individual, Julian Geerebaert shot a 71 in the final round to jump 19 spots from yesterday to tie for 71st at +13. Geerebaert tied his second-lowest 54-hole score of the season, as he tallied seven birdies in his three rounds.
Iowa State shot the lowest score in the third round at one-over par, as well as carding a tournament-low +5 score on Par 4's.
The Cyclones have three weeks off before the Big 12 Championship begins in Hutchinson, Kan. The three-day tournament starts on Monday, April 27th and concludes on Wednesday, April 29th.
