Five Men Finish in Top 10 to Secure Griak Invitational Team Title

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's cross country team stayed true to form and packed the lead pack enroute to a solid performance at the Griak Invitational to claim the team race. The Cyclones scored 24 points to runner-up Boise State's 39 to secure the title.
"What a day! Really excited with the performance, the guys did really well," said head coach Jeremy Sudbury. "Very proud of our freshmen and sophomores that executed the race plan. Anytime we can hold out some of your top athletes and still win a race, it's exciting, talks about the depth of our program, the culture that we're trying to build, and kind of the future of what that's going to look like."
Two-time All-American Rodgers Kiplimo paced ISU with an individual runner-up finish while Dylan Maloney (3rd), Devan Kipyego (4th) and Mikah Peters (5th) rounded out the top five. Matthew Shelly finished 10th overall as the Cyclones' fifth scorer.
"Shout out to Rogers (Kiplimo), he looked great, getting ready to build into the rest of the season with him," said Sudbury. "Devan (Kipyego) with a nice rust-buster, he needed to get that one under his belt. And obviously Dylan Maloney and Mikah Peters had big performances, improving drastically from two weeks ago and really put themselves in conversation to make our roster for Big 12s. Matthew Shelly had a great race, really top to bottom with Kipruto (Koech), Nate Pestka and Carson Driemeier, they did a great job of improving from two weeks ago. And I feel like we can't get away from the rain, so even under the rainy, cold conditions, the guys went out there and did a great job to win and really proud of that."
Additional finishers for Iowa State were Carson Driemeier (21st), Kipruto Koech (39th) and Nathan Pestka (50th).
"So now onto Nuttycombe," said Sudbury. "We'll open up more athletes there and get closer to our full form as we head to Big 12s."
