Joe Resendez joined the Iowa State Athletics Department as director of sports medicine for football in 2025.
Resendez spent the previous three years as the head athletic trainer for the XFL/UFL, managing daily operation of the athletic training staff. He also oversaw strength and conditioning, nutrition and sports science initiatives. He was also the head of player health and performance for Slamball from 2022-24.
Prior to his time with the XFL, Resendez gained extensive experience in the NBA, working as the head athletic trainer for the Sacramento Kings from 2018-22. The stint in Sacramento came after working as assistant athletic trainer for the Los Angeles Clippers from 2010-18.
From 2007-10, Resendez was head athletic trainer and strength and conditioning coach for the Rio Grande Vipers of the NBA G-League.
The Brownsville, Texas, native earned his bachelor's degree in athletic training from UT-Pan American and his master's degree in health and exercise science from Louisiana Tech. He also has a post graduate certificate in sports performance analytics from Michigan.
