AMES, Iowa - Herchell Troutman ran for two scores, including the game-winner with nine seconds to play, and John Hessler threw for a touchdown and ran for another as Colorado rallied for a wild 43-38 victory over Iowa State in a Big 12 Conference game.
Colorado (5-4, 3-3 Big 12), which has dominated the all-time series, 40-11-1, has not lost to Iowa State (1-8, 1-5) since 1983.
Troutman finished with 108 yards on 20 carries while Hessler completed 24-of-42 passes for 299 yards. Iowa State's Darren Davis picked up 68 yards on 22 carries before leaving in the second quarter with a charley horse.
The Buffaloes, who overcame three touchdown passes by Todd Bandhauer, need an upset win over either Kansas State or Nebraksa to be in contention for a 10th-straight bowl appearance.
Colorado trailed 35-24 entering the fourth quarter but immediately cut into the lead on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Hessler. Five minutes later, Hessler connected with Javon Green on a 30-yard scoring strike, but a failed extra point left the Buffaloes with 37-35 lead.
After Jamie Kohl gave the Cyclones back the lead with a 25-yard field goal with 2:54 to play, the Buffaloes came back to win the game on Troutman's one-yard scoring run. On the winning drive, which went 52 yards in 11 plays over 2:45, Colorado converted on a 4th-and-10 just inside Iowa State territory.
Iowa State took the lead 5:08 into the first quarter when Bandhauer hooked up with Daman Green for a 27-yard scoring strike. Darren Davis' five-yard TD run made it 14-0 before Jeremy Aldrich converted on a 35-yard field goal for Colorado with 46 seconds to play in the quarter.
Troutman's first touchdown came 1:56 into the second quarter on a five-yard run to cut the deficit to 14-10. The Cylones then appeared to take control when, following Bandhauer's seven-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Watley, free safety Dustin Avey intercepted Hessler and returned it 94 yards for a score.
The third quarter was another wild 15 minutes. First, the Buffaloes came within 28-17 on a 21-yard TD run by Marcus Stiggers. After Bandhauer gave Iowa State back the 18-point advantage with his third touchdown pass, a seven-yarder to Watley, Colorado came back once more on Dwayne Cherrington's one-yard scoring run.
Bandhauer finished 16-of-30 for 209 yards.
