AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team split with Missouri today in a Big 12 doubleheader at the Southwest Athletic Complex. Former Ankeny prep Michelle Junod was 2-of-3 with one run in the Cyclones, 3-2 victory. Iowa State fell to Missouri in the second game, 6-3.
The Cyclones took an early 1-0 lead over the Tigers in the first game. Senior Lisa Frank singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Adi Blackmon grounded out to the pitcher to score Frank.
Iowa State added another run in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Amber Lessinger singled to left field and advanced to second on a Kimi Yoshizawa sacrifice hit. A Frank sacrifice hit advanced Lessinger to third. Lessinger scored on an error by Missouri third baseman Erin Erickson.
The Tigers battled back scoring one run in the fourth and the fifth. Christy Skouby walked and advanced to second on a Linda Swarts single. Erickson singled and was thrown out at second. Swarts advanced to third and Skouby scored on the play to make it, 2-1. Ankeny native Amy Farmer led off the fifth inning with a double. Kristen Burke was sent in to run for Farmer. Burke scored on a Stacy Gemeinhardt single to tie the game at 2-2. Junod doubled to lead off the seventh and advanced to third on a sac bunt by pinch hitter Amy Crittendon. Junod scored on a wild pitch by Tiger hurler Stephanie Falk. Lessinger was 1-of-2 with one run, while Adi Blackmon and Frank each contributed a hit.
Senior Kristin Ferguson started the game for the Cyclones and allowed two runs on four hits while fanning 2. Freshman Jen Bice (7-2) recorded the win for the Cyclones, allowing no runs on two his and striking out one.
Missouri started off the night cap scoring three runs in the top of the first. Gemeinhardt singled, stole second and stole third. Chritsy Skouby walked and stole second. Erickson's RBI single scored Gemeinhardt and advanced Skouby to third. Erickson and Skouby scored on a Farmer RBI double to make it, 3-0.
The Tigers added another run in the third. Erickson reached on an error by Cyclone third baseman, Michelle Junod. Farmer walked advancing Erickson to second. Erickson scored on a RBI single by Mary McGrane making it, 4-0.
Iowa State battled back scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. Frank singled to center field, stole second and advanced to third on a Blackmon single. Blackmon stole second and advanced to third on a Robyn Riedler RBI singled that scored Frank. Riedler stole second and Blackmon scored on an error by the shortstop. Riedler advanced to third on the error and scored on a passed ball making it, 4-3.
The Tigers expanded their lead scoring two runs in the fifth. Erickson doubled and advanced to third on a Burke single. Burke stole second and advanced to third on a McGrane sacrifice hit that scored Erickson. Sara Vassmer's RBI single scored Burke to make it, 6-3.
The game was called after the sixth inning due to darkness. Riedler had a hit and a RBI. Frank, Blackmon, Lessinger, Jessica Polo, Kim Hoover and Erica Martinez each contributed a hit.
Martinez (3-2) recorded the loss for the Cyclones, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out four. Ferguson came in to relieve Martinez and allowed two runs on four hits, striking out one batter.
Iowa State is 13-10 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12 Conference. The Cyclones resume play when they travel to Oklahoma State for a double header Friday and to Oklahoma for a two game series on Saturday and Sunday.
