CAPE GIRARDEAU, Miss. - The Iowa State softball team (6-3) won the Red Pool championship of the Southeast Classic in Cape Girardeau, Mo. The Cyclones defeated Southwest Missouri State, 2-1 and dropped a game to Creighton, 2-1. They won the championship game by beating Southeast Missouri State, 5-1.
Southeast Missouri State had a 1-0 lead until ISU scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Tiffany Cornine scored on an error by the pitcher to tie the game at 1-1. A Lauren Cathey RBI single made it a 2-1 ballgame. Amy Crittendon went 2-of-2 to lead the Cyclone hitting attack, while Cathey, Adi Blackmon, Lisa Frank and Michelle Junod each contributed a hit. Freshman Jen Bice improved her record to 4-0 as she allowed seven hits, one run and struck out six.
Iowa State lost the second game of the day losing to Creighton, 2-1. The Cyclones took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Frank singled then stole second and third. Freshman Erica Martinez singled to score Frank. Creighton answered back in the bottom of the fourth as the Blue Jays scored two runs to make it 2-1. Martinez went 1-of-1 while Jessica Polo, Frank and Riedler each contributed a hit. Senior hurler Mandy Loushin (0-3) took the loss allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out nine.
The Cyclones defeated Southeast Missouri State in the championship game. ISU scored two runs in the top of the third as Frank scored on a Martinez sacrifice fly. Junod's RBI single made it 2-0. Riedler stole home to make it 3-0 in the fourth. Iowa State added two more runs in the seventh as Junod's RBI single to right field drove in Frank. Polo reached on a fielder's choice to make it 5-0. Southeast Missouri State tried to rally back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run on an error. Junod went 2-of-4 with two RBI, Polo went 3-of-4, Riedler was 2-of-3. Cathey and Frank each contributed two hits, while Blackmon had one. Martinez had an RBI. Kristin Ferguson (1-0) recorded the win allowing one run, on four hits.
