OMAHA, Neb. - Cinnamon Gooding hit a two-run home run and was 3-of-5 at the plate to lead Iowa State, but the Cyclones fell to Creighton, 11-10, in non-conference softball in Omaha. The two teams combined for 25 hits, including three home runs.
Creighton opened the game with four runs in the bottom of the first inning off starter Mandy Loushin. Iowa State reached the board with one run in the second inning. Michelle Junod scored the Cyclones' first run on a sacrifice fly by Jill Hlavecek.
ISU tied the game, 4-4, with three runs in the top of the third. Jessica Polo led off the inning with a walk and scored on Gooding's two-run homer. Robyn Riedler walked, advanced to second on Junod's sacrifice and moved to third on a ground out before scoring by stealing home. Iowa State took a 5-4 lead on Polo's RBI single in the fourth inning. Lisa Frank, who led off the inning with a single and stole her 15th base of the season, scored on Polo's single.
Creighton answered with five runs in the bottom of the frame off reliever Erica Martinez, who replaced Loushin in the second inning. Marie Gieron hit a grand slam to drive in four of five runs in the inning. Gieron also hit a two-run blast in the first inning.
After the Jays added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Iowa State rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Gooding drove in two runs with a single, which was her third hit of the game. Iowa State had two runners on base when Riedler grounded out to give the Jays the one-run win.
With her stolen base in the fourth inning, Frank extended her ISU single-season school record to 16. She had 13 stolen bases last year, which was the previous single-season mark.
