OKLAHOMA CITY - Third-seeded Texas jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and held off a late Iowa State rally to eliminate the Cyclones, 4-3, at the Big 12 Softball Tournament in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Longhorns scored two runs in the first inning on a pair of RBI singles. Texas struck again in the second when Tiffiny Valdehueza scored from second base on a Lindsay Gardner single. The Longhorns stretched their lead to four runs when a Jodi Reeves double scored Audrey Hendricks.
Iowa State first got on the board in the sixth inning when Eric Martinez homered to left center. Amberly Lessinger doubled to score two runs and advanced to third on the throw to bring the Cyclones within 4-3 in the top of the seventh. Two batters later, later Lessinger was picked off at third and Jill Hlavacek struck out to end the game.
Texas will advance to play the loser of the Oklahoma/Texas A&M game at 10 a.m. Friday. Texas' Charla Moore threw a six-hitter and improved to 21-13 on the season while Iowa State's Mandy Loushin fell to 3-9 with the loss. Loushin gave up eight hits in six innings of work.
The Cyclones, seeded 10th, exited the tournament with an 18-29 record while Texas upped its mark to 29-24-1.
