AMES, Iowa - The 23rd-ranked Nebraska soccer team topped Iowa State 2-0 in Big 12 action Sunday. With the win, the Huskers squared their Big 12 record at 2- 2-1 and moved to 7-4-3 overall. Iowa State slips to 5-7-1 overall and 2-4 in the Big 12.
Nebraska outshot Iowa State 7-3 in a scoreless first half. Cyclone goalkeeper Karen Hasselman made three saves in the opening period. The Huskers converted on two of four shot attempts in the second half, scoring on two corner kicks by sophomore Jenna Cooper. Nikki Baker finished off the first Cooper corner in the 58th minute, and senior Kori Saunders knocked in another corner kick at the 72-minute mark. Nebraska goalkeeper Erin Miller recorded five saves in the second half.
Nebraska outshot ISU 11-10 and held a 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
"Nebraska is a very solid team," ISU interim head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "They play the end line and get a lot of corner kicks. We had a couple of mental lapses on corner kicks today."
"I was pleased with our team's overall effort," Hornbacher said. "The players battled together as a team, and that showed a lot of character. I think the defining characteristic of this team is that the players play as a team for 90 minutes and leave it all on the field."
Erin Weldon led Iowa State in shots for the second consecutive game, firing three attempts. Nebraska improved its record to 7-0 against Iowa State since 1996. Sunday's two-goal difference equals the narrowest Husker margin of victory over Iowa State. The first half Sunday marked the first time an Iowa State squad had held Nebraska scoreless in a half.
