AMES, Iowa - Jen Bice struck out seven batters as the Iowa State softball team defeated Drake 3-2 today at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones improved to 9-8 overall as the Bulldogs fell to 3-20.
ISU took an early lead scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. Adi Blackmon singled and scored on a Lindsey Herrin double. Iowa State added another run in the bottom of the third inning as Blackmon scored on a Herrin sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Drake battled back scoring one run in the top of the fifth inning. Jamie Waterman doubled to left field and advanced to third on a Michele Markham single. Waterman scored on a passed ball to bring Drake within one.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. Katie Wappler doubled and scored on a Brooke Buchanan double making it 2-2.
Iowa State answered back in the bottom of the seventh as Rainey Eanes scored on a Erica Martinez sacrifice fly to give ISU the win.
Martinez (4-4) recorded the victory allowing one run on two hits while fanning two in 2 2/3 innings. Blackmon was 3-of-4 at the plate while Herrin was 1-of-2 with two RBI. Martinez had one hit and one RBI while Rainey Eanes and Kristin Shipley each contributed a hit.
The Cyclones return to action when they travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on Texas Tech March 22 at 3 p.m. and March 23 at 11 a.m.
