STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State swept Iowa State, 1-0 and 8-4 in a doubleheader Monday at Cowgirl Stadium. Cyclone hurler Erica Martinez fanned 21 batters over 14 2/3 innings.
The Cowgirls won the first game, 1-0. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning. Jade Lindly led off the seventh with a walk and advanced to third on a Calli Behmer single. Lindly scored on a fielder's choice to give OSU all it needed.
Martinez (9-14) recorded the loss for the Cyclones, allowing one run on three hits while fanning 11. Adi Blackmon, Kim Rodgers, and Julia Lindsey each contributed a hit.
Oklahoma State took the night cap, 8-4 in nine innings. Iowa State took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Kelly Wardein walked and reached second as Katie Ruby reached on an error by OSU second baseman Calli Behmer. Wardein and Ruby scored on a Laura Browning double to give ISU a 2-0 lead.
OSU answered back scoring one run in the bottom of the third inning. Jenny Kip walked and stole second. Kipp scored on a single by Stephanie Hodges to make it, 2-1. The Cowgirls tied the game, 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hodges second RBI single of the day scored Casey O'Neil to tie the game.
Iowa State regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Blackmon tripled to left center scoring pinch runner Heather McLatchie to give ISU a 3-2 edge.
The Cowgirls answered back scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game, 3-3 as Lindly scored on a wild pitch.
The Cyclones rallied back to take the lead in the top of the ninth inning. Lindsey Herrin hit her ninth home run of the season to give ISU a 4-3 lead.
Oklahoma State answered back scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Nicci Quiroz scored on a O'Neil double to tie the game, 4-4. A grand slam by Ryan Realmuto gave OSU the 8-4 victory.
Martinez (9-15) again took the loss for ISU, allowing eight runs on 10 hits while striking out 10. Browning was 1-of-2 at the plate with two RBI while Herrin and Blackmon was 1-of-4 with one RBI respectively.
Iowa State (16-22 overall and 5-11 in the Big 12) return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Des Moines to take on Drake. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
