USAFA, Colo. - Iowa State opened the 2002 soccer season with a 3-0 shutout victory over Air Force at the Falcon Invitational Friday. Iowa State interim head coach Rebecca Hornbacher notched her first victory as a collegiate head coach. The win was the Cyclones first road victory since a 3-2 victory at Texas Tech, Oct. 20, 2000. It was ISU's largest margin of victory on the road since a 3-0 win at Texas Tech, Nov. 1, 1998.
The game was scoreless until the 32-minute mark, when ISU's Kelly Burke scored an unassisted goal. The goal was Burke's first as a Cyclone. The goal ended an ISU scoring drought of over three games, dating back to 2001. Iowa State struck again in the opening moments of the second half when sophomore Nikki Gamble scored off of an assist by freshman Kristina Baumann. Arlene Samuel notched her third career goal in the 65th minute when she stole a Falcon pass and scored from 20 yards away.
Cyclone junior goalkeeper Beth Chapman played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded her sixth career shutout, which ranks second in the ISU record books. Chapman recorded four saves on the day.
Iowa State outshot Air Force 12-9. It marked the first time ISU outshot an opponent in four games, dating back to Oct. 28, 2001.
The Falcon Invitational continues with Air Force (0-1) battling Gonzaga (0-0) Saturday. Iowa State (1-0) will face Gonzaga Monday, Sept. 2, at noon.
