AMES, Iowa - Minnesota topped the Iowa State soccer team 1-0 at the ISU Soccer Complex Friday. With the victory, the Golden Gophers move to 4-1 on the season while the Cyclones slip to 3-2.
Minnesota came into the game averaging nearly 20 shots per game. The Cyclone defense held the Gophers in check most of the first half as Minnesota got off five shots. Minnesota struck early in the second when junior Rachael Roth broke away from the ISU defense and fired a shot past goalkeeper Beth Chapman. The goal was Roth's fourth of the season.
Chapman was the leader on the defensive end for Iowa State. The junior recorded six saves on the day, several of them of the spectacular variety.
"They had a couple of players in the midfield we were keeping an eye on. We did a good job of closing them out," Chapman said.
Cyclone coach Rebecca Hornbacher noted the effort of the team. "Our team stepped up to the challenge and played a physical game. Lindsey Lees, Tiffany Belz and Beth Chapman played strong games. Lindsey dominated her aspects of the game just like we asked, and Belz is as tough as nails."
On the offensive end, Hornbacher noted, "We need to tie up some loose ends to create more scoring opportunities." Seven different Iowa State players took single shots on the day.
Iowa State is off Sunday and returns to action at Massachusetts, Friday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m.
