AMES, Iowa - After nearly 75 minutes of competitive, scoreless soccer, the Kansas offense struck twice in two minutes to secure a 2-0 victory over Iowa State Friday. Iowa State falls to 3-6-3 overall and 0-3-1 in Big 12 play while Kansas (10-3-1) evens its conference mark at 2-2-1.
The game was the second played under the lights at the ISU Soccer Complex, with a season-high crowd of 452 on hand. The turnout was the fourth-highest at a home game in Iowa State soccer history and the most since 526 attended the ISU-Nebraska contest on Oct. 27, 2000.
Kansas and Iowa State combined for eight shots in the opening period, and the Jayhawks just missed in the 10th minute on consecutive shots by Rachel Gilfillan and Jessica Kilpatrick. The eight combined shots equals the fewest Iowa State and any opponent have taken in a half this season.
"We did a good job keeping them in front of us defensively," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "I thought we had one of our best defensive efforts of the season. Kansas has some very dangerous players."
Iowa State found some early opportunities in the second half as Kristina Baumann fired two consecutive shots on goal in the 54th minute. In the 68th minute, Baumann broke through the KU defense again, but Meghan Miller made one of several big saves on the night. She finished with six saves and collected her sixth shutout of the season.
Kansas broke through the Iowa State defense in the 75th minute when Amy Geha passed to Caroline Smith, who was alone in front of the net. Smith, the Big 12's second-leading scorer, converted and collected her 12th goal of the season. Just moments later, Jessica Smith fed Caroline Smith, who lofted a shot over Cyclone goalkeeper Beth Chapman at the 76:03 mark.
"We know we have to compete, but we have to do it the whole game," Hornbacher said. "We weren't sharp for five to seven minutes and it cost us the game."
Kansas finished with a 12-10 edge in shots, and both teams took three corner kicks. Kristina Baumann took a game-high five shots, including four on goal. Baumann has 97 shots in 30 career games at Iowa State.
Iowa State continues Big 12 play when undefeated Oklahoma State comes to Ames Sunday, Oct. 12. Game time is 1 p.m.
