AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team scored three unanswered goals to come from behind and knock off previously unbeaten Oklahoma State 3-1 Sunday. Redshirt freshman Kate Kirwan led the offensive attack for Iowa State, scoring a career-high five points. The Cyclones (4-6-3) earned their first Big 12 victory of the season, and Oklahoma State (11-1-2) falls to 3-1-2 in conference play.
"We played a full 90 minutes today," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We were able to maintain our focus, and there was no gap where we lost our concentration."
With the victory over the 21st-ranked Cowgirls, Iowa State captured its second win over a ranked foe in program history. ISU, then ranked 24th, won 1-0 at No. 20 Tennessee on Sept. 19, 1999 to start the season 6-1. Sunday's victory over Oklahoma State also marks the latest in a season that an Iowa State squad has defeated an unbeaten team. Last season, ISU topped Oklahoma State 2-1 after the Cowgirls had started the season 10-0.
Iowa State owned the majority of the possession time early in the game, and the Cyclones just missed when Kristina Baumann's shot hit the crossbar in the 31st minute. Oklahoma State struck first when Jolene Schweitzer played a ball off Nikki Wojtowicz in front of the net and knocked it in with just over nine minutes remaining in the half.
The Cyclones answered with a goal of their own with five minutes remaining. Christine Beatty sent a corner kick into the box that was played by Kate Kirwan. Kirwan got a shot off that was deflected, and junior Alli Coleman knocked in the loose ball from the right side for her first career goal.
As the second half began, Iowa State continued on the attack, with Amy Flores taking three shots in the first ten minutes of the half. In the 60th minute, Kirwan took a pass on the left side and was fouled from behind as she dribbled into the box. She converted the penalty kick, scoring what would be the game-winning goal.
"We created a lot of opportunities today," Hornbacher said. "We were able to go one-on-one to the goal, and we got a penalty kick out of it."
The Cyclones had another opportunity in the 72nd minute with an indirect kick in the six-yard box, but Oklahoma State denied consecutive shots by Kirwan. With under five minutes left and OSU goalkeeper Kathrin Lehman playing close to midfield, Kirwan collected a ball cleared from the Iowa State end and beat Lehman down the left side to collect her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
"That was the most solid 90 minutes we've played this year," Hornbacher said. "We got contributions from a lot of players today."
Iowa State outshot Oklahoma State 18-15, the third time in the last four games ISU has outshot its opponent. Kirwan led the Cyclones with a career-high seven shots and Flores added a season-high four shots. Kirwan's five-point output is the most in a game for an ISU player since Baumann collected six against Texas Tech last season.
