DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa State used a big fourth inning with four hits and three errors to defeat intrastate rival, Drake, 5-0, Thursday afternoon, in Des Moines. The game was called after the fifth inning due to darkness. With the win, Iowa State improves to 12-17 on the season. Drake falls to 14-14 over all this season. The Cyclones haven't lost to Drake since 1996.
Sophomore Lindsey Herrin was the pitcher on the mound for ISU and picked up her third win of the season, improving her pitching record to 3-2. She gave up only two hits, while striking out four Bulldog batters. Iowa State had 12 hits to Drake's 2.
Iowa State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning when senior Adi Blackmon scored from third base on a wild Drake pitch. Katie Ruby then hit a double to score Kelly Wardein from third base. In the Cyclones' big fourth inning, they got a run from pinch runner, Krysta Rees. Herrin came up to bat and hit a single to center field and advanced to second base on the throw and in the process, scoring Blackmon and junior Julia Lindsey. It was Herrin's 10th and 11th RBI of the season.
Blackmon, Wardein and freshman Cary Akins led the way with two hits apiece, while Blackmon led the way with two runs and Herrin with two RBI.
"I thought it was a good win for us," head coach Ruth Crowe said. "We are getting back on track with our hitting and it was nice to see the 12 hits. I also thought Lindsey (Herrin) pitched a great game. This game gives us great momentum going into our series with Kansas this weekend."
Iowa State will play host to it's first series of the weekend when the Kansas Jayhawks come to town. The Cyclones and Kansas will play on Saturday, March 29, starting at 2 p.m., at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The two teams will also play again on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.
