TULSA, Okla. - The Iowa State softball team played a tough game but lost to Portland State, 3-2 in the Cyclones third game in the 2003 Embassy Suites Tulsa Invitational Saturday night in Tulsa, Okla. With the loss, Iowa State's record falls to 9-9. Senior Adi Blackmon and freshman Cary Akins scored runs for the Cyclones, while junior Julia Lindsey notched three hits, including a double.
ISU was scheduled to play host Tulsa in the day's late game, but the game was postponed due to cold temperatures. The game will possibly be made up on Sunday, March 9.
Senior Jen Bice and freshman Kristin Karanzias split time at the plate, combining for three strikeouts and six hits.
Portland State scored one run in the first inning and two more in the third. Iowa State scored its two runs in the third inning as well.
Junior Misty Kimura started the inning out by advancing to first base on a walk. Freshman Cary Akins then reached first base on a fielder's choice, in which Kimura was thrown out going to second base. After Lindsey grounded out to second base, Akins advanced to third base. Blackmon, as the next batter, reached first base on an error by the pitcher and then immediately advanced to second on another error. The Portland State second basemen was overthrown so Blackmon advanced to third, scoring Akins in the process as well as her.
The Cyclones would threaten to tie the score in the seventh inning but the Vikings thwarted the goal by throwing sophomore Heather McLatchie out at home on a Lindsey double.
The Cyclones continue tournament play on Sunday when they take on Louisiana Monroe at 11:30 a.m. The Iowa State/Tulsa game could possibly be made up after the afternoon game at 2 p.m.
