OKLAHOMA CITY - The Iowa State softball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Baylor, Thursday night at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament. The tournament was held at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. Baylor, as the No. 10 seed, scored two runs in the first inning and one more in the second to defeat the No. 7 seeded Iowa State. The Cyclones end the 2003 season with a 19-28 record, while Baylor improves to 30-27 overall.
Iowa State started senior Jen Bice on the mound and finished the game with freshman Kristen Karanzias. Bice took the loss, her record falling to 0-6 on the year. Karanzias pitched four innings without giving up a hit and struck out one Baylor batter. Baylor's Cristin Vitek threw the complete game and allowed only three ISU hits.
The Lady Bears got on the scoreboard right away in the first inning when center fielder Kelly Levesque scored on a fielder's choice when right fielder Sarah Caudle hit a single to second base. Baylor got its second run when short stop Kim Wilmoth scored when first basemen Kourtny Westerfeld hit a sacrifice fly to right field. The Lady Bears added one more run in the second inning when catcher Danielle Arnold scored off of an Amber Daniel base hit.
Freshman Cary Akins got Iowa State on base in the second inning with a single to center field, but she was left stranded and the Cyclones ended the inning without a run. Senior Katie Ruby hit a single to center field in the fourth inning and junior Kelly Wardein hit one to right field in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cyclones weren't able to capitalize on the hits and never found home plate.
"We didn't show up with our bats until the seventh inning," said head coach Ruth Crowe. "That is the difference. They got to us early and we didn't really do anything at the plate until the seventh inning and you can't wait until the seventh inning. I expected the game to be a battle and it was. Vitek came out and threw a great game and we didn't do a lot at the plate."
The Cyclones end the 2003 season with a 19-28 record. Senior Erica Martinez ends her career at Iowa State as its all-time home run leader, while senior Adi Blackmon ends hers as ISU's all-time stolen base leader.
