STILLWATER, Okla. - Iowa State sophomore Kate Kirwan scored her third goal of the season in the second half, but Oklahoma State scored a goal in each period to defeat the Cyclones, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Stillwater. With the loss, ISU falls to 7-8 overall and 4-3 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma State improves to 11-3-2 overall and 3-3-1 in league play. The loss ends ISU's winning streak at four games.
Oklahoma State took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Cowgirl Jolene Schweitzer scored the first of her two goals on the day. Teammate Carla Dolomont passed her the ball and Schweitzer headed it in for the goal.
The Cowgirls outplayed the Cyclones in the first half, outshooting them, 8-4, and recorded four corner kicks to ISU's three. The Cyclones had four saves to OSU's three.
In the second half, Schweitzer added another goal in the first five minutes when she nailed a shot that was deflected off the cross bar.
The Cyclones got on the board in the 50th minute when Kirwan headed the ball in of a deflection for the score. ISU didn't let up after Kirwan's goal as they had nine more shots but Oklahoma State had four saves and blocked two of the shots to end the Cyclone rally.
The Cyclones played solid offense in the second period with 10 shots to OSU's nine and seven corner kicks to the Cowgirls' four.
Freshman goaltender Joanna Haig had six saves and the team also had a save. Junior Kristina Baumann led the way with three shots, with one of them coming on goal. Renee de St. Aubin, Deb Benakis and Brittanie Waddell each had two shots on the afternoon.
Iowa State travels to Texas next weekend to take on the Longhorns on Friday night starting at 7 p.m. ISU returns home to play host to No. 7 Texas A&M on Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
