AMES, Iowa-- Led by junior Kristina Baumann's two goals and two assists, ISU posted a 6-1 win over visiting Iowa on Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex. With the victory, ISU ends the regular season with a 8-11-0 record, while Iowa ends the 2004 season with a 2-14-2 record. The eight wins was the most Cyclone wins in a season since the 1999 squad won 11 matches. The Cyclones scored four first-half goals en route to posting the third biggest win in school history. Seniors Kelly Burke, Alli Coleman, Karen Hasselman, Laura Schweer and Erin Weldon played in their last regular season game at ISU and were honored in a pregame ceremony.
Iowa State wasted no time in getting on the board when it scored in the second minute as Burke nailed a shot off a cross from Baumann. It was Burke's first goal of the season. ISU saw another scoring opportunity just minutes later off a corner kick, but the shot glanced off Iowa goaltender Britta Vogele for the Iowa save. Sophomore Jess Villhauer scored ISU's second goal 13 minutes after the first goal off assists from Baumann and junior Amy Flores to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.
ISU added another goal in the 20th minute when Baumann hit a shot that glanced off Vogele's hands and landed in the back of the net. Flores added her second assist of the day on the goal.
Iowa scored on own goal late in the first half to give the Cyclones the 4-0 lead at halftime. The four goals ISU scored in the first half were the most since the Cyclones scored five goals in the first half against Western Illinois on Oct. 10, 1997.
The Cyclones outshot the Hawkeyes, 8-2, in the first half. Defensively, ISU had two saves.
Baumann added her second goal of the game and fourth of the season early in the second half when Flores found her for the score at the 60-minute mark. Freshman Stephanie Kaphingst rounded out the scoring for the Cyclones in the 68th-minute when sophomore Kate Kirwan and Villhauer found her along the right side for the goal.
Iowa added its lone goal in the 74th minute when Melisa Kaetterhenry tipped in a shot off an assist from Lindsey Phillips.
All in all, the Cyclones had a stellar day on offense with 12 shots, all of them being on goal. They also added four corner kicks. Flores had three assists on the day and Villhauer had an assist and a goal. Baumann led the way with her two goals and two assists for six points.
"Obviously our goal as a team was to play a solid 90 minutes of soccer and really fight and battle and to be able to take that going into the tournament next week and I think we did that," said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "Hat's off to the entire team. They played with a lot of heart and played as a team. The seniors played fantastic. Overall, it was a great day. The team really played for the seniors today."
Iowa State gained two points in the first annual HyVee Cy-Hawk series, but the Hawkeyes still lead the series, 3-2.
The Cyclones will be the No. 8 seed in the 2004 Big 12 Tournament and will take on No. 1 seed Kansas on Wednesday at 11 a.m. The league tournament is being held at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
