OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ? The Iowa State softball team suffered a 2-0 loss to Texas on Wednesday night at the 2004 Big 12 Softball Tournament. The tournament is being held at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. Texas, as the No. 8 seed, scored one run in the second inning and another in the fifth to defeat No. 9 seeded Iowa State. The Cyclones end the 2004 season with a 13-31 record, while Texas improves to 24-23 overall.
Iowa State started freshman Alyssa Ransom on the mound, who had a solid day on the mound, striking out four Texas batters and only giving up one walk. Her record fell to 10-18 on the year. Texas's Christina Gwyn also threw the complete game and only allowed two ISU hits.
After a scoreless first inning, Texas got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Longhorn Wynter Turner, who was walked to get on base, scored off an Alexis Garcia single to center field. Garcia then advanced to second on a Megan Willis groundout but was stalled there when Tina Boutelle struck out looking. Texas led, 1-0, after two innings.
The Cyclones threatened to score in the top of the fifth when sophomore Jennifer Bigbee hit a single to right field. Senior Ashley Core was inserted into the game to pinch run for Bigbee and stole second. She then advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Texas's Gwyn, but was stalled at third when senior Julia Lindsey popped up to the second baseman to end the half inning. The Longhorns added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Boutelle hit a double to left center to land on second and Amber Hall came up right away and hit another double to score Boutelle. The score was now 2-0. The Cyclone defense ended the inning by striking out Tamara Poppe and throwing out Sarah Wieszczak, who was trying to steal second.
The Cyclones rallied in the seventh when senior Kelly Wardein reached first base after Texas' catcher dropped the third strike. Junior Kim Rodgers hit the ball up the middle for her 12th hit of the season, sending junior Heather McLatchie, who was pinch running for Wardein, to second base. The runners advanced when Bigbee grounded out to the second baseman, but the rally ended when freshman Fallon Johnson struck out to end the inning and the game.
Iowa State had two hits and one error, compared to Texas, who had seven hits and one error. The Cyclone defense had 18 putouts and eight assists.
Iowa State ends the 2004 season with a 13-31 record. Senior Julia Lindsey ends her career at Iowa State, fourth on ISU's all-time hits list with 160 career hits and a career batting average of over .300. Senior Ashley Core ends her career with 16 stolen bases, which is sixth on ISU's all-time chart.
