AMES, Iowa - The freshman class came up big tonight as the Iowa State soccer team defeated Drake, 2-0, Sunday night at the ISU Soccer Complex. It was the third game of the Cyclone Classic tournament. ISU's record improves to 1-1. Drake, who lost, 3-0, to Arizona on Saturday night, falls to 0-2. Freshmen Jo Haig and Laura Boyer both spent time in goal and recorded a save each.
Freshman Beth Passman scored her first collegiate goal at the 6:41 mark in the first half off an assist by junior Kristina Baumann. Baumann caught up with Passman and Passman slipped in past Drake goal Kate Stack. In the second half, freshman Erin Witte and sophomore Jennie Bireley found freshman Brittanie Waddell, ISU's second goal of the night.
The Cyclones came out aggressive in the first half, registering eight shots to Drake's three. Drake had two more corner kicks to ISU's zero. ISU didn't let down in the second half, registering eight more shots, while holding Drake to three.
"I'm excited about the contributions we had throughout the team tonight," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We had an overall team effort tonight. I thought we were more organized and I thought we attacked a lot better tonight than we did on Friday night. I think we had a case of first-game jitters on Friday night. I thought our forwards did a good job as did the entire team."
The Cyclones will travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on North Carolina State on Friday, Sept. 3, starting at 7 p.m. ISU will then travel to South Carolina to play South Carolina at 12:30 on Sunday afternoon.
