AMES, Iowa-- Sophomore Kate Kirwan scored a goal with nine seconds left in the game to help ISU defeat Youngstown State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex. It was the last game of the 2004 Nike Invitational. With the win, ISU improves to 3-5 on the season, while Youngstown State falls to 0-6-1. Wisconsin Milwaukee defeated Creighton, 3-0 in the day's earlier game.
After a Youngstown State foul in the box, Kirwan stepped up and took the shot and nailed it in the back of the box for the lone goal of the game. The Cyclones had a season-high 25 shots while holding Youngstown State to zero shots and zero corner kicks, while ISU had 10 corner kicks.
"It took a lot of persistence and believing to get the goal and with nine seconds to go, we got it in the door," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We had a lot of opportunities to score and it was good to get the result and it was great that Kate could finish it off."
Junior Kristina Baumann led the way for Iowa State with five shots and three shots on goal. Erin Witte, Jess Villhauer and Kate Kirwan had four shots and Christine Beatty, Amy Flores and Stephanie Kaphingst had two each. Kelly Burke and Brittanie Waddell added a shot. Of ISU's 25 shots, 12 were shots on goal.
"When you have a lot of opportunities to score and you don't, frustrations can arise," Hornbacher said. "We had a lot of shots on goal and I knew one was going to win the game. Kate took an outstanding shot. I'm glad to get the win."
Four Cyclones were named to the all-tournament team. Villhauer was named the overall tournament MVP, senior Erin Weldon was named the defensive MVP and junior Deb Benakis and freshman Erin Witte were named to the all-tournament team.
Iowa State starts conference play on Friday, Sept. 24, when Colorado comes to Ames. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex. The Cyclones will play Nebraska on Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex.
