AMES, Iowa - AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team, fueled by their first goal of the season from sophomore Stephanie Kaphingst, defeated Purdue, 1-0 on Friday. The Cyclones broke their scoreless streak for the season in the 77th minute as sophomore Meghan Smith found Kaphingst, who fired the ball in the top-left corner of the goal.
"It was only a matter of time before we finally put one in," head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "Our defense was playing solid enough and I knew if we could score just one goal, we would come out with the win."
ISU had several near-misses in the first half and had one of its better chances early on. At the 15-minute mark, sophomore midfielder Hannah Swanbom's shot from just inside the box rattled the crossbar. Freshman Leslie Hill had another chance to score just before half, but her attempt also caromed off the post.
Iowa State came out in the second half firing on all cylinders and got a boost off the bench from freshman Meghan Smith, who used her speed and ball control to out-play defenders most of the night.
"Meghan was extremely dangerous tonight," Hornbacher said. "She gave us a solid effort and really set the tone for the rest of the team. "
Purdue's best chance to score came inside the 50 minutes as a shot from Parrissa Eyorokon was barely kicked away by sophomore goalkeeper Joanna Haig. The Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native had five saves on the night and earned her second shutout of the season and the fourth of her career.
