Iowa State Falls To Drake In Home Opener

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team fell to the Drake Bulldogs, 4-2, on a rainy night at the ISU Soccer Complex. The rain did not dampen the Cyclone spirit as they came out with aggressiveness. Offensively, Iowa State outshot Drake 16-10, but the Bulldogs were able to breakdown the Cyclone defense.

“It's tough to lose early in the season and to an in-state rival,” said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher.

Iowa State jumped on the board first on Leslie Hill's pass from the corner to Brittanie Waddell in the middle of the box at the nine-minute mark. Drake went on to tie the score in the first half on a goal by Sarah Foote. The Bulldogs took a 3-1 lead in the second half off goals by Melissa Lewis and Liz Woerle.

At the 79-minute mark, Cyclone freshman Elise Reid served a free kick into the box that found fellow freshman Amanda Nimtz for the header-goal, giving the Cyclones a spark. But Drake quickly exstinguished it when Woerle dribbled up the left side alone after the pass from Melissa Nelson forcing ISU goalkeeper Ann Gleason out of the net to contest her, one-on-one. Woerle then exploded past the last defender, scoring Drake's final goal on an open net.

“It's tough when they scored on four counter attacks,” said Hornbacher. “We outplayed Drake but didn't capitalize on our offense. We need to make corrections defensively.”

Up next for the Cyclones are matches at the Big 12/ Big Ten Challenge in Minneapolis, Minn. Iowa State plays Minnesota on Friday at 7 p.m. and Northwestern at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
