MINNEAPOLIS-- The Iowa State soccer team put up a solid effort but fell short, playing Big Ten opponent Minnesota Friday night. The Cyclones were unable to capitalize on a number of scoring opportunities, falling to the Gophers, 2-0. Tallying nine shots on goal, both Leslie Hill and Elise Reid had shots on goal that were just slightly off the mark.
Iowa State looked like a much improved team according head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “Overall we played a complete game, but we need to cash in on scoring opportunities,” said Hornbacher. “I was really happy with the effort of the team and I know we will continue to build. We will be dangerous to deal with if we improve at the rate we are improving.”
Tied with no score in at the break, both teams fought hard for shots during the second half. Late in the game, Reid had a free kick that she punched just over the top of the goal. Junior Amanda Purple and senior Kate Kirwan dominated the back line for the Cyclone defense.
Iowa State dominated much of the game outshooting Minnesota 14-11, but failed to put the ball in the back of the net. Minnesota cashed in on two scoring opportunities. The Gophers broke the scoreless tie at the 63-minute mark on Clare Grimwood's first goal of the season. The other was a shot from Lindsey Schwartz that found the upper left corner of the goal.
Friday's match marked the sixth meeting all-time between Iowa State and Minnesota. The Gophers have won the last five consecutive contests.
The Cyclones complete its portion of the Big12/ Big Ten Challenge Sunday at Northwestern at 1 p.m. Iowa State leads the all-time series against the Wildcats 1-0.
