Iowa State Shuts Out Northwestern, 1-0

EVANSTON, Ill.- Leslie Hill scored her first goal of the season as the Iowa State soccer team shut out Northwestern, 1-0, for its first win of the season Sunday in Evanston, Ill.

In a back-and-forth game, Northwestern outshot the Cyclones 17-5, but Iowa State weathered the storm, capitalizing early and then holding on the rest of the way for the victory. ISU freshman goalkeeper Ann Gleason had her best performance of the season, tallying eight saves and earning the first shutout of her collegiate career.

With the win, the Cyclones improved to 1-3 on the young season, while Northwestern fell to 1-2 on the year.

Iowa State's only goal came in the 12th minute when Hill capitalized on a throw-in. Hill took a Northwestern defender one-on-one, got into the box and cut the ball back to shoot near post for the goal.

“We did what we needed to do,” said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “We were able to get a lot of players in and create some chances. [Northwestern] took a lot of shots, but we stayed organized and did what we needed to do to get the win.”

The Cyclone backfield put up a solid performance as Northwestern's offense continued to attack the goal during the second half. Late in the game senior Kate Kirwan stepped in to save a shot by the ?Cats. Gleason made the initial save, but the ball's momentum continued toward the net when Kirwan saved the ball from crossing the line to preserve the shutout.

Iowa State remains on the road next weekend at the Diadora Classic at Creighton in Omaha, Neb. Iowa State plays the Creighton Blue Jays on Friday at 7 p.m., and the Northern Iowa Panthers on Sunday at 11 a.m.
