AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team stunned Nebraska in a double overtime battle, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex. With less than a minute in regulation and trailing, 2-1, ISU's Stephanie Kaphingst put away a penalty kick to send the game into overtime.
The Cyclones dominated both overtime periods, outshooting the Huskers 9-1 during OT and 24-14 overall. The Iowa State game-winning goal was scored by freshman Lauren Fader with 21 seconds remaining, the first goal of her career.
With the win, the Cyclones open the Big 12 Conference 1-0, and improve to 5-6-0 overall. Nebraska falls to 6-2-2 overall, 1-1-0 in the Conference.
Head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said, “I am extremely proud of the character and effort of our team to fight back from behind and battle it out for 90 minutes, plus overtime. I am so proud of our team on the complete team effort.”
The Cyclones struck first, leading 1-0, off a direct free kick. Freshman Casey Bothwell scored the first goal of her career in the 10th-minute of the game. ISU got the free kick as the result of a handball off a Nebraska defender just outside the box.
Ten minutes later, Nebraska had the same opportunity after an ISU foul just outside of the box. Senior Brittany Timko's shot looked to have a chance for an NU goal, but Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason barely got her hands on it. The save was good enough to knock the blast out of bounds.
Many of Nebraska's scoring opportunities came from cornerkicks. With eight minutes left before halftime, NU had a cornerkick opportunity that the Cyclone defense initially knocked clear of the box. Husker defender Tanya Dennis put the ball back towards the Cyclone goal, however, and found Shay Powell, who was able to put away the goal for Nebraska. Powell's goal marked a 1-1 tie at halftime and was her second of the season.
Nebraska took a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute as Timko took a direct kick that found Carly Peetz on the left side of the goal, who slid and shot from two yards out.
Iowa State refused to let the Husker's walk away with a 2-1 victory. The Cyclones regained their momentum and continued to strike offensively. With 49 seconds remaining in regulation, ISU freshman Lauren Odino drove through the Husker defense with only the goalkeeper between her and a goal. Odino's first shot was saved by NU goalkeeper Jamie Klages, but Odino found the rebound and drew a foul before she could get the second shot off. Junior Kaphingst put the penalty kick in the back of the net, to bring the score even at two goals apiece to force overtime. Iowa State was able to capitalize on several Husker penalties.
Freshman Elise Reid fired three shots on goal within the first two minutes of the first overtime period. She had a season-high eight shots in the match. Junior Erin Witte also added three shots for the ISU striking attack. The Cyclones boasted a strong striking attack the first overtime, but were unable to capitalize.
The final goal was scored by Fader with 21 seconds remaining in the double-overtime, to carry the Cyclones to a 3-2 win. Hornbacher said, “The final goal was closure for a well fought battle and a reward for their hard work throughout the game.”
The Cyclones were able to defeat the Huskers for the second consecutive season, after Nebraska had won the first 10 straight meetings in the series.
Nebraska's Klages had nine saves in the loss, while Gleason had six saves for the victorious Cyclones.
Iowa State is back on the road Friday against Baylor in Waco, Texas. ISU then returns to the ISU Soccer Complex Sunday, Oct. 1, to face Texas Tech at 1 p.m.
