Cyclones Drop Two Games To No. 10 Baylor

AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State was held to five hits in the first game and stranded 10 base runners in the second game as the Cyclones dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader to No. 10 Baylor, 6-1 and 7-4, at the Southwest Athletics Complex.

With the losses, ISU falls to 22-35 overall and 1-11 in Big 12 play. Baylor improves to 41-11 overall and 11-2 in conference action.

In the first game, Baylor broke open a tight game with a three-run sixth inning en route to a 6-1 win.

The Bears scored two in the first on an RBI groundout by Chelsi Lake and a single by Mirias Romero. The Cyclones scrapped back with a run in the first on Katie Reichling's hit to right field that scored Fallon Johnson, who reached on a single to lead off the inning.

Both teams were held scoreless until the Bears scored one in the fifth and three in the sixth. In the fifth it was Lake who again delivered, this time with a RBI double to right center off Cyclone starter Alyssa Ransom. Brette Reagan launched a three-run homer in the sixth, her eighth of the season, to round out the scoring.

In game two, Baylor jumped out to a 7-0 lead after six innings before the Cyclones made things interesting, closing the gap to 7-4 with a runner on in the seventh.

Iowa State got on the board in the sixth as Courtney Wray scored on a throwing error by Baylor shortstop Maritza Martinez to cut the lead to 7-1.

Reichling delivered an RBI double in the seventh and Courtney Wray had a run scoring single to cut it to 7-4. On Wray's single to center, pinch runner Whitney Perkins scored on the hit and Reichling came in on an error by the Bears.

Kristin Ferguson (19-6), the game one winning pitcher, came in to close the door on the Cyclones and pick up her fourth save of the season. Kirsten Shortridge (14-3) got the win for the Bears despite walking six and hitting two batters.

Courtney Wray went 3-for-4 in the second game to pace the Cyclones. Reichling finished the day with two hits and two runs batted in as the Johnston, Iowa native moved into fifth all-time at ISU with 72 career RBI. Amanda Bradberry also collected a pair of hits on the afternoon.

Ransom (10-15) got the loss in the first game for ISU, allowing six runs on 11 hits. The Round Rock, Texas native equaled a season-high with seven strikeouts.

Charissa Carlin (9-9) was on the losing end in the second game after giving up seven runs on 12 hits while striking out three.

The Cyclones will be back in action Wednesday as they travel to Missouri for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. with live stats available at Cyclones.com.
