Casey Bothwell scored the first goal of the game in the 19th minute, collecting the rebound of Hill's shot and putting it away.
Hill then struck with a necessary insurance goal, her second of the season, in the 65th minute. Jordan Bishop earned her first career assist and point on the play.
The Hill goal became important because the Wolfpack got on the board less than a minute later. Karen Zmirak drove a free kick from 30 yards over the outstretched arms of ISU goalkeeper Ann Gleason to cut the lead in half.
Gleason (4-1-1) and the Cyclone defense buckled down the rest of the way and preserved the 2-1 win. Gleason made six saves on the day while
“It was a back-and-forth game and we did a good job of putting our chances away,” said Hornbacher. “Leslie Hill had a one-v-one opportunity and Casey Bothwell was in good position to put away the rebound to give us an early lead. Leslie had another opportunity in the second half, was in good position to attack, stayed composed and put it away perfectly. We need to stay strong all game. We gave up a goal that we ordinarily wouldn't. We weren't organized. We need to clean things up before Sunday.”
The Cyclones' 4-1-1 start ties the 1998 and 2000 squads for the second-best six-game start in program history. The 1999 team was 5-1-0 through six games and proceeded to win their next two games to improve to 7-1-0.
With her 41st win, ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher has tied Cathy Klein for the most victories in Cyclone history.
ISU concludes play in the Rebel Classic Sunday when they face host UNLV. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. (CT).
