TUCSON, Ariz. ? 24th-ranked Virginia Tech got a run-scoring double from Jessica Everhart in the sixth inning to break up a 1-1 tie and defeat Iowa State, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Hillenbrand Invitational.
The Hokies' (12-4) Erin Ota singled to open the inning and advanced to second when Iowa State (12-3) centerfielder Kelsey Kidwell misplayed the ball. Ota came in to score three batters later as Everhart doubled down the left field line off ISU pitcher Charissa Carlin to open a 2-1 lead.
Carlin (5-2) had pitched well for the Cyclones until the sixth, allowing just one run to score on another error in the fourth inning after ISU had opened up a lead an inning earlier on Sydni Jones' first career home run. Carlin finished with two strikeouts while allowing two runs, one of which was earned, in 5.1 innings. Rachel Zabriskie struck out both batters she faced in relief of Carlin.
After Jones and the Cyclones got to Virginia Tech starter Elly Gosby, the Hokies called on Heather Lowry (5-0), who picked up the win tossing 2.2 innings of two-hit shutout ball.
Jones finished 2-for-3 in the game while Ariel Coburn and Carleigh Berry collected ISU's other hits. Berry also had two stolen bases for the Cyclones, who left four runners on base. The Cyclones were just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Six Hokies collected hits in the game.
Iowa State will face New Mexico State this evening at 9 p.m. (CT).
