AMES, Iowa ? Texas had 11 hits and Meagan Denny struck out nine as the Longhorns defeated Iowa State, 10-0, in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at the Southwest Athletic Complex.
Denny (13-4) scattered five Cyclone hits and kept ISU off the board as Texas improved to 17-12-2 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play. The Cyclones fell to 23-13 overall and 1-2 in league play.
The Longhorns got on the board in the first with a two-run homer to centerfield by their best hitter, Tallie Thrasher.
The Cyclones had an opportunity to negate the Texas' runs in their half of the first but failed to score Kelsey Kidwell and Jacquelyn Beatty, who were stranded on second and third.
Neither team scored in the second but Texas had a big third inning, tacking on five runs to pad its lead. Kelly Melone and Brittany Chalk led the rally with a three-run homer and a two-run double, respectively.
Thrasher came through again in the fourth with a run-scoring single through the right side that plated Loryn Johnson, making it 8-0 Texas. The Longhorns would add two more in the fifth to make the final margin 10-0.
Kidwell and Amanda Bradberry each collected two hits for Iowa State while Thrasher and Melone drove in three each for the Longhorns.
Amie Ford (4-4) took the loss for the Cyclones. Ford allowed five runs, just two of which were earned, in 2.2 innings.
