Cyclones Split With South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. ? Iowa State and South Dakota State split Wednesday afternoon's doubleheader at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium. The Cyclones took the first game 3-0 in nine innings but dropped the second game on a walk-off two-run double, falling 8-7 to the Jackrabbits in the nightcap.

With the split, Iowa State moves to 27-27 overall while South Dakota State goes to 17-27 on the season.

In the opening game, neither team could put anything on the board despite a combined 14 hits in the first eight innings.

The Cyclones finally lit up the scoreboard in the ninth inning with a two-out rally. Jacquelyn Beatty pinch hit for Carleigh Berry and drew a walk. After Berry re-entered the game, Kristy Olsen beat out an infield single. Kelsey Kidwell then reached on infield single that scored Carleigh Berry from second to break up the tie. Alex Johnson then belted a two-run single up the middle to give ISU the 3-0 lead.

Rachel Zabriskie (13-12) then worked around a leadoff double to pickup the complete game win. Zabriskie fanned eight Jackrabbit batters in the game to become ISU's freshman leader. The Austin, Texas native now has 137 strikeouts on the season.

In the nightcap, ISU scored six runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-6 lead before giving up a two-run double to Dani Brosher in the bottom half to lose the game.

On the afternoon, Amanda Bradberry finished 5-for-8 with a triple while Carrie Monroe went 2-for-4 with three walks. Alex Johnson collected three hits and four RBI and Ariel Coburn hit her 10th homer of the season in the sixth inning of the second game. Coburn is just the fourth player in school history to hit 10 home runs in a single-season. Kidwell stole two bases to move into a tie for first in the single-season charts with 18.

Iowa State will wrap up regular season action this weekend as it travels to face Kansas. First pitch for Saturday's game is set for 1 p.m.
