Cyclones Fall To Drake, 2-0, In First Game

AMES, Iowa ? Kelsey Kahler and Carrie Hatfield hit back-to-back fifth inning homers and Brynne Dordel struck out 10 to lead Drake to a 2-0 win over Iowa State at the Southwest Athletic Complex on Wednesday.

Drake (18-16) out hit the Cyclones (23-18) seven to four and Dordel had the Cyclones off balance all afternoon as the Bulldogs picked up the win.

ISU pitcher Rachel Zabriskie kept Drake off the boards until the fifth, allowing just three hits in the first four innings, but Kahler homered with one down in the fifth to make it 1-0. Hatfield then hit a full count shot to left field to make the final margin.

The Cyclones threatened in the sixth and seventh but struggled on the bases. Kristy Olsen walked to lead off the sixth but was caught stealing and Sydni Jones hit a two-out single in the seventh but was picked off to end the game.

Courtney Wray finished 2-for-3 for the Cyclones while Olsen and Jones picked up ISU's only other hits.

The Bulldogs got two hits from Marilyn Buss but it was the two solo homers that proved to be the difference.

Zabriskie (11-6) took the loss for the Cyclones, giving up five hits and two runs in 4.1 innings of work.

Dordel (13-5) picked up the win, allowing just four hits and two walks in the game for Drake.
