LAWRENCE, Kan. ? Iowa State out hit Kansas seven to five but stranded eight runners in a 6-2 loss to Kansas in the regular season finale for both squads on Sunday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.
The Cyclones (28-28, 4-14 Big 12) had runners in scoring position in the first four innings but were able to score just a single run during the stretch as Kansas' (37-18, 7-11) pitcher Allison Clark got out of numerous early jams.
Kansas took the lead in the second on Brittany Hile's third home run of the season. The solo shot was the first hit of the game for the Jayhawks.
Another long ball in the third added to the Jayhawks lead as Val Chapple blasted a three-run homer to center to make it 4-0 Kansas. KU took advantage of a pair of Rachel Zabriskie walks.
The Cyclones got one back in the top of the fourth on Courtney Wray's first-pitch homer to leadoff the inning. The homer was Wray's fifth of the season.
After the next two hitters got out, ISU got a hit from Kristy Olsen and a walk from Kelsey Kidwell but Allison Clark got Amanda Bradberry to strikeout as ISU left runners on base and in scoring position for the fourth time in as many innings.
The long ball accounted for another run in the fifth as Sydni Jones went yard for the Cyclones, blasting a pitch over the wall in right field to cut the Kansas' lead to 4-2.
Kansas tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to increase its lead to 6-2. Chapple led off the inning with a double to left field and came in to score on a one-out single by Dougie McCaulley. The second run came on a pinch-hit double by Liz Kocon that plated McCaulley.
Zabriskie (14-13) took the loss for the Cyclones, allowing six runs on just five hits. The freshman walked five and struck out three in the complete game.
Clark (9-3) got the win for Kansas, giving up two runs on six hits. Valerie George picked up her third save of the season, holding the Cyclones to one hit in two innings of relief work.
Jones finished 2-for-3 to lead the Cyclones.
The Cyclones will travel to the Big 12 Championships next weekend with their opponent to be determined.
