CHICAGO?Three unanswered goals by the Iowa State soccer team lifted the squad to a 3-1 victory over DePaul Friday. It was the Cyclones' first win of the young campaign and gave first-year head coach Wendy Dillinger her first taste of triumph at ISU.
Goals by freshman midfielder Laura Wooster, junior defender Lauren Fader and junior forward Elise Reid gave the Cyclones (1-2) the win. ISU had nine shots on goal to DePaul's four while the Blue Demons (0-5) had a 9-4 corner advantage.

“We talked about how this can be a turning point for us,” Dillinger said. “We fought hard in the second half and deserved to win.”
For the second straight match, ISU gave up an early goal. DePaul found the back of the net 9:47 into the match when Molly Borchardt headed-in a cross off a corner kick to give Borchardt her first goal of the season. The goal was DePaul's first shot of the match.
“We have to stop giving up early goals,” Dillinger said. “After the goal we looked a bit sluggish. We still need to be more consistent and put in a good performance for the full 90 minutes.”
The Cyclones got the equalizer with 2:39 left before intermission from Wooster, who had subbed in just over 10 minutes before she knotted the score at one, for her first collegiate goal. Wooster scored by dribbling past DePaul goalie, Brittni Lally.
“Laura's goal changed the momentum of the game as we went into halftime,” Dillinger said. “She worked hard for the goal and it was a great individual effort.”
ISU took the 1-1 score line into the intermission where they trailed DePaul 7-4 in shots but held a 4-2 shots on goal advantage.
Team co-captain Fader gave ISU its first lead of the season in the 66th minute to notch her first tally of the campaign with Reid registering her first assist of the year. Reid gave the Cyclones an insurance goal at 81:32 for her second score of the season off an assist from junior forward Amanda Nimtz.
Junior goalie Ann Gleason got the win for the Cyclones while making three saves. With those three stops, the Stillwater, Minn. native became the all-time career leader in program history with 242.
“Ann is solid and someone we can count on,” Dillinger said. “She is very clean, comes up with some big saves and really takes the pressure off our defense.”
The Cyclones finally got some good news on the injury front too, as junior midfielder Casey Bothwell made her season debut and played 37 minutes.
“Casey did well in the midfield,” Dillinger said. “She controlled the ball for us and changed the flow of the game when she came in.”
Iowa State returns to the pitch Sunday for a 3 p.m. match with Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Last season, the Cyclones beat the Panthers 4-1 Sept. 7 in Ames.
