AMES, Iowa? For the first time this season, the Iowa State soccer team conceded three goals, and it proved costly Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex as the Cyclones fell to Baylor 3-1 in Big 12 Conference action.
Senior Casey Bothwell attempted to ignite a late Cyclone rally when she scored her third goal of the campaign in the 68th minute. Bothwell slotted a shot into the back of the net after the ball fell to her feet near the top of the penalty area. Bothwell's goal put the score at 3-1 after the Bears had reeled off the match's first three tallies.
Baylor got on the scoreboard early when Lotto Smith headed the ball into the net off a cross from the right side at the 11:29 mark.
ISU (6-5-4; 1-4 Big 12) head coach Wendy Dillinger said the early goal from Baylor put the Cyclones on their heels.
“I think it made our team feel like we had a huge hole to climb out of,” Dillinger said. “It's not though. We're not making the jump from taking what we do offensively in training to games.”
The Bears doubled their lead 8:53 into the second half when Dana Larsen scored an unassisted goal. Baylor's last goal of the game came in the 62nd minute when Smith scored her second of the afternoon.
For the match, the two sides were level with six shots on goal apiece. Baylor (6-3-4; 2-2-2 Big 12) outshot Iowa State 14-11 and the Bears had four corner kicks to the Cyclones' two.
Dillinger said her squad needs to do a better of job of putting together a full performance.
“We have to do a better job of being more consistent,” Dillinger said. “Today, at times, we put them under pressure, but we didn't consistently play well on both sides of the ball for the full 90 minutes.”
Senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason went the distance for the Cyclones and recorded three saves. Gleason's record stands at 6-5-4 for the campaign.
Iowa State returns to action Friday when No. 17 Texas A&M comes to Ames. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.
