AMES, Iowa?Mary Kate McLaughlin headed the ball into the back of the net with 17 seconds remaining in the first overtime period Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex to give the Iowa State soccer team a 1-0 win over Northern Iowa.
McLaughlin's header, her third goal of the season, came off a free kick that Amanda Woelfel struck from approximately 35 yards away, giving the Cyclones a deserved victory according to the statistics. ISU outshot UNI (2-8-2) 23-6. Adding to the statistical one-sidedness of the match was shots on goal (8-1) and corner kicks (3-1), all in favor of ISU.
Iowa State (6-3-4) head coach Wendy Dillinger felt the goal was due.
“We had our chances in both halves and didn't put the ball in the back of the net,” she said. “We did what we needed to do on the free kick. We have worked hard on free kicks the past week in practice, and they're something we need to capitalize on.”
Dillinger said the Woelfel, McLaughlin combo on free kicks could continue to give opposing teams fits.
“Amanda (Woelfel) strikes the ball well. She's accurate and is a huge weapon for us,” Dillinger said. “Mary Kate did her job and is someone we look for on free kicks.”
The win was the Cyclones' first overtime triumph in five attempts this season. The previous four overtime contests resulted in draws.
The first half was a scoreless affair. Freshman Megan Long had one of the Cyclones' best chances, heading a shot on goal that forced Northern Iowa goalkeeper Lauren Potzman to make a save.
In the opening frame, the Cyclones held a clear statistical edge on shots (12-4), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (2-1).
The Cyclones return to action Friday in Big 12 Conference action. Iowa State plays host to Oklahoma at 7 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.
