AMES, Iowa? The Iowa State soccer team led every statistical category Friday evening at the ISU Soccer Complex but the final score line. The Cyclones fell to Oklahoma 1-0 in Big 12 Conference action.
A 20-5 shots advantage for Iowa State (6-4-4; 1-3 Big 12) did not provide the Cyclones with enough to get past the Sooners. Oklahoma's Dria Hampton scored the match's lone tally in the 65th minute off an assist from Brianna Turang. Hampton fired a driven strike from approximately 15-yards out that squeezed just under the cross bar.
Despite the setback, Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger felt her squad played quality soccer.
“We played well overall,” Dillinger said. “We moved the ball very well. We had one mental breakdown the whole night, and it came on the goal. You can't do that in this conference and expect to win.”
Despite falling behind in the second half, Iowa State battled vehemently to find the equalizer. The Cyclones' top scoring opportunity came in the 74th minute when senior Elise Reid played freshman Jordan Wagner behind the Sooner defense. Wagner fired a quality shot that forced OU goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire to make a diving save.
“Jordan Wagner had a great breakaway and had a great shot,” Dillinger said. “(Devonshire) made a great save.”
Dillinger said Devonshire was not alone in causing the Cyclones to work for quality scoring chances.
“Oklahoma didn't give up a lot space in the middle,” Dillinger said. “Their defense did a good job of staying home and clearing the ball out.”
Senior Lauren Fader led the Cyclones with five shots, while freshman Amanda Woelfel fired a team-high three shots on goal.
ISU held a 6-1 corner kick advantage and an 8-3 shots-on-goal edge over Oklahoma (7-6-1; 2-3 Big 12).
Senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason played the full 90 minutes for ISU and registered two saves. Gleason's season mark moved to 6-4-4.
Iowa State plays host to another league opponent Sunday when Baylor comes to Ames. The Cyclones and Bears are set to kickoff at 1 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.
