AMES, Iowa? The Iowa State soccer team led South Dakota State 1-0 for 85 minutes Friday night at the ISU Soccer Complex, but the Jackrabbits equalized in the 86th minute and the two teams settled on a 1-1 double-overtime draw.
Junior midfielder Jordan Bishop got Iowa State (0-0-2) off to its desired start when she fired in a 25-yard strike off an assist from senior midfielder Casey Bothwell.
“It was a great goal,” Iowa State head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “It allowed us to take a breath, but we should have pressured them more immediately (after the goal).”
After a fairly even statistical first half that saw South Dakota State hold a 5-4 shots advantage and the two squads level on corner kicks at two, ISU had several chances to put the game out of reach. The Cyclones saw back-to-back strong opportunities come up just short in the 55th and 56th minutes.
“When we get chances, we have to do better at capitalizing on them,” Dillinger said. “Overall, we are creating more opportunities.”
The Cyclones' inability to finish off the Jackrabbits came back to haunt them with 4:45 remaining when South Dakota State's Kayla Braffet redirected a cross into the net.
Despite, conceding the tying goal Iowa State fought admirably. Just 30 seconds after the SDSU equalizer, sophomore Laura Wooster got behind the Jackrabbit defense only to see her low strike saved. Additionally, with 18 seconds left Bishop created a great opportunity when she crossed a ball to senior Lauren Fader whose header attempt drifted wide.
The overtime periods proved to be statistically level as SDSU outshot ISU 3-2, while the Cyclones held a 2-1 corner-kick edge. Overall, the statistics were nearly as level as the final score line. The Jackrabbits had 15 shots to Iowa State's 12. The Cyclones' held a 7-5 shots-on-goal advantage.
Iowa State is back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when Montana visits the ISU Soccer Complex.
