LUBBOCK, Texas? The Iowa State soccer team could not overcome a pair of first-half goals from Texas Tech Friday evening at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The Cyclones fell 2-0 in their Big 12 Conference opener.
Texas Tech's Dawn Ward opened the scoring at the 20:30 mark off an assist from Casey McCrall. Ward, the Red Raiders' leading goal scorer this season, notched her eighth goal of the campaign. The Red Raiders doubled their lead 10:07 later off a shot from Conner Williams. Taylor Lytle was credited with the assist.
Despite trailing at the break, ISU head coach Wendy Dillinger said the Cyclones came out strong to start the match.
“We had a dynamic first 15 minutes,” Dillinger said. “We got behind their defense and looked strong. We also played strong the last 15 minutes of the game. We essentially played 30 minutes of good soccer tonight. It was the middle 60 minutes where we were on our heels and weren't aggressive.”
The 2-0 score line stood at halftime. In the opening half, Texas Tech (6-4-0; 1-0-0 Big 12) held a 7-4 shots edge and a 3-0 shots-on-goal advantage. Neither team registered a corner kick in the first period.
The second half saw Texas Tech hold a slim 5-4 shots edge, with two being on target.
For the game, Iowa State (4-2-4; 0-1-0 Big 12) held a 4-2 corner kick advantage. The Red Raiders' outshot ISU 12-8 and also fired four shots on goal to the Cyclones' one.
Dillinger felt a handful of Cyclones had solid performances.
“Mary Kate McLaughin was phenomenal tonight,” Dillinger said. “Ann (Gleason) made some great saves in goal. Jordan Bishop worked hard in the midfield and created some good chances. Amanda Nimtz also had some quality chances up front.”
Bishop led the Cyclones with two shots, with one being on frame.
Iowa State's Gleason went the distance in goal. The Stillwater, Minn., native registered a pair of saves and recorded her second setback of the season.
The Cyclones continue their Big 12 road trip when they travel to Boulder, Colo. to face Colorado Sunday at 2 p.m.
