BOULDER, Colo.?The Iowa State soccer team could not end a six-match road trip on a high note, as the Cyclones fell at Colorado 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.
The Buffaloes struck early, with a goal by Kelly Menachof in the fifth minute. The goal was Menachof's first of the season and Erin Bricker notched the assist. The next 85 minutes would prove to be a defensive stalemate.
“We had an early breakdown in the defense and allowed a goal,” ISU head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “We played well after the early goal. It was a good game, but we just couldn't score.”
For the first half, Colorado (6-5-0; 3-0-0 Big 12) held a 7-5 shots lead. The Buffaloes had four corner kicks to Iowa State's two.
For the match, Colorado outshot Iowa State (4-3-4; 0-2-0 Big 12) 17-9 and had a 6-1 shots-on-goal advantage. The Buffaloes also had an 8-4 corner kick edge.
Sophomore defender Mary Kate McLaughlin led ISU with three shots, while freshman Kelsey Calvert fired a shot on goal.
Dillinger said McLaughlin doesn't allow playing defense to limit her ability to get involved with the offense.
“Mary Kate does a great job of getting the ball and attacking through the midfield,” Dillinger said. “When she gets the opportunity to go forward she's very productive in generating attacking chances.”
Senior goalkeeper Ann Gleason played the full 90 minutes for the Cyclones and registered five saves. Gleason's record for the year is 4-3-4. The Stillwater, Minn., native has played every minute in goal this season for ISU.
After a six-match road trip, the Cyclones return home Friday when Iowa State plays Oklahoma State at the ISU Soccer Complex at 7 p.m.
