Cyclones Come Up Short Against Western Illinois

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ? Jamie Goss homered in the second innings and hit the game-winning single in the seventh as Western Illinois defeated Iowa State, 5-4, Saturday afternoon at the Metrodome Softball Classic. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 1-2 this season.

Goss was a thorn in the Cyclones' side, finishing 2-for-4 with four runs batted in including the game winner off of Rachel Zabriskie (1-2).

Western Illinois (3-2) put a run on the board in the first and three more in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The scoring was highlighted by a two-out three-run homer in the second inning by Goss.

The Cyclones finally got to WIU pitcher Kamren Ferguson in the sixth, putting a crooked number on the board by scoring four runs to tie it up at 4-4.

Heidi Kidwell started the inning with a single and Bianca Lopez reached on an error. After Wray reached on a fielder's choice, Johnson belted a double to score two and tie the school-record with her 104th run batted in.

After Sydni Jones singled, freshman Erica Miller ripped a pinch-hit ground-rule double to plate Johnson and Jones, tying it at 4-4.

The Leathernecks were able to overcome the blown lead and get a run across in the bottom of the seventh on Goss' single that ended the game.

Iowa State was led by Jones, who went 2-for-3 for her third multi-hit game of the season. Miller drove in her first career runs with her two-run double in the sixth inning.

Freshman Tori Torrescano started for the Cyclones and settled in after giving up four runs in the first two innings. Torrescano allowed four runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Ferguson (1-2) got the win for the Leathernecks, giving up four runs on seven hits in the complete game.

The Cyclones will continue tournament action tonight when they face intrastate rival Iowa at 5 p.m.
