OMAHA, Neb. - Rachel Zabriskie out dueled three-time Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year Tara Oltman to lead Iowa State to a 2-1 win over Creighton in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader at the CU Sports Complex. With the win, the 800th in the program's history, Iowa State improves to 19-12 this season.
Zabriskie (16-6) allowed just one run on three hits to tie Lori Young as the school's all-time wins leader with 49. The junior, who is now 49-44 with wins in each of her last six starts, struck out 10 Bluejays to get the win. It is her sixth game this season with at least l0 strikeouts.
The Cyclones touched Oltman (12-6) for nine hits and had their leadoff hitter on base in every inning except the first.
With the game knotted up at 1-1 in the seventh, Heidi Kidwell got things started by taking advantage off the outfield shift to triple off Oltman, who hadn't allowed a three-bagger yet this season. It was just the 10th extra-base hit Oltman had allowed this season.
After the Creighton ace struck out Bianca Lopez looking, Courtney Wray delivered a double that score Kidwell to give ISU a 2-1 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Zabriskie would take care of the rest, retiring the Jays in order in the seventh to secure the Cyclones' sixth-straight win.
ISU got the scoring started in the third inning when Alex Johnson beat out an infield grounder to score Kidwell and give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. Kidwell had singled to open the inning, running her hitting streak to four games.
The Bluejays would eventually tie it up, but not until the sixth inning as Amy Baker was jammed by Zabriskie but fought it off, delivering a two-out bloop single that plated Michelle Koch to make it 1-1.
Zabriskie narrowly avoided giving up a homer to Lauren Larson earlier in the game. In the second inning, Larson lifted a deep fly ball that looked like it would leave the park, but a strong wind caught the ball and it hit the top of the fence and dropped inside the park for a double. Zabriskie was able to strikeout the next two batters to avoid giving up the early lead.
The Cyclones were led by Kidwell and Wray, who finished with two hits each. Johnson extended her hitting streak to four games with her third inning single.
The Cyclones and Bluejays will play again at approximately 5:25 p.m.
