Zabriskie Breaks Record; ISU Beats Texas Tech, 4-2

LUBBOCK, Texas - Rachel Zabriskie became Iowa State's all-time wins leader Sunday afternoon as the junior pitched the Cyclones past Texas Tech, 4-2, in Big 12 Conference softball action at Rocky Johnson Field. With the win, Iowa State improves to 21-13 and 1-1 in Big 12 play.

Zabriskie (17-7) scattered nine Texas Tech (29-5, 1-1) hits to win her 50th career game, breaking the previous mark held by Lori Young (1984-85). The Austin, Texas native also had seven strikeouts, to extend her school record in that category to 546.

The Cyclones got on the board in the first as Courtney Wray homered off Tech starter Ashley Brokeshoulder. The two-run shot, Wray's second this season and the ninth of her career, plated Bianca Lopez who walked with one out in the inning.

The Cyclones added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to go up 4-0.

In the fourth, Sydni Jones hit her second double of the game and came in to score when Kelsey Kidwell beat out an infield single.

The run in the fifth came on a Lopez double that scored Heidi Kidwell, who extended her hitting streak to seven games with an infield single to lead off the inning.

Texas Tech made up some ground in the bottom of the fifth as Emily Bledsoe scored on an infield hit by Mikey Kenney.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Zabriskie managed to get out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh to pick up her record-setting win.

The Red Raiders put together three-straight, one-out singles to trim the lead to 4-2 before Zabriskie retired Raven Richardson on strikes to pick up the win.

Jones led the way for the Cyclones, tying a career high with a pair of doubles.

Kenney finished 3-for-4 for Texas Tech while Bledsoe and Stephanie Drewry had two hits each.

Brokeshoulder (6-3) suffered the loss for the Red Raiders. The freshman hurler allowed three runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Iowa State will play its first home game Wednesday when it hosts Iowa in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series at 4 p.m.
