AMES, Iowa - Iowa State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but fell 3-2 to 13th-ranked Oklahoma Saturday afternoon in Big 12 softball action at the Southwest Athletic Complex. With the loss, ISU falls to 22-15 overall and 1-3 in Big 12 action.
The Cyclones struggled to get anything going against OU pitcher Michelle Gascoigne, who limited ISU to just three hits over the first six innings, before tallying three hits and a pair of runs in their last at bat.
Trailing 3-0, Erica Miller roped a single that caromed off third base to start the seventh. Pinch hitter Dalyn Varela came in and singled through the right side to advance pinch runner Amandine Habben, giving the Cyclones runners on first and second with no outs.
After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Gascoigne retired Carrie Monroe for the first out and got Kelsey Kidwell to ground out. On Kidwell's ground out, Habben came across for the first Cyclone run.
Heidi Kidwell then beat out an infield hit and Varela came around to score, making it a one-run game. After Heidi Kidwell reached base she was ruled out at first for stepping off the base with the ball in the pitcher's circle, ending the game with the Cyclones a run short.
The Sooners (29-8, 3-1) got home runs from Haley Nix and Amber Flores, and a run-scoring single by Wendy Trott to account for their runs.
Gascoigne (4-0) tossed a complete game to pick up her first Big 12 win. The freshman allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out 12.
Tori Torrescano (4-4) got the loss for the Cyclones, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up a pair of runs on six hits. Rachel Zabriskie allowed a run on one hit in 3.2 innings of relief work.
Courtney Wray led the Cyclones with two hits in the loss.
Nix and Flores paced Oklahoma with two hits each.
Iowa State will be back in action Tuesday when it plays host to Drake at 4 p.m.
