AMES, Iowa – Iowa State loaded the bases twice, but left nine runners on base in the game as they fell to Drake, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex. ISU's season record drops to 22-16 on the season.
In the second inning, Drake advanced Torey Carddock to second base but she was doubled up after a Bridget Shields foul fly was caught by Carleigh Berry and thrown to second before she could get back.
Iowa State loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame via a Sydni Jones walk, an Erica Miller double and Katie Harms getting hit by a pitch. However, the Cyclones would not plate anyone as Drake starting pitcher Brynne Dordel struck out Berry swinging.
Drake made the first mark on the scoreboard in the third as Molly McClelland sent a homer over the left-centerfield wall to make the score 1-0. It was McClelland's fifth homer of the season.
The Cyclones set themselves up to put some runs on the board in the bottom half of the third. Singles by Heidi and Kelsey Kidwell and a walk by Courtney Wray loaded the bases with no outs. After an Alex Johnson fly out, Jones brought home ISU's first run on a groundout to the second baseman. That was all for the Cyclones in the inning as Miller flew out to right to end the third.
After a run of perfect half innings, Iowa State got Kelsey Kidwell on via a walk and Courtney Wray on with a single. Johnson brought home Kelsey Kidwell on an RBI double to get her 125th RBI of her Cyclone career and Iowa State a 2-1 advantage.
The advantage was short lived as Elena Leon blasted a two-run homer over the right field wall to give Drake the 3-2 edge in the top of the sixth.
The Cyclones chances looked slim in the final frame of the seventh with Heidi and Kelsey Kidwell both getting out to start the inning. Wray then swung and missed on her third strike, but advanced to first on the wild pitch. Johnson also got on base after being hit by a Dordel pitch. The rally was cut off when Jones lined out to third for the final out of the game.
Dordel picked up the win for the Bulldogs to improve to 11-4. She went the distance allowing five hits, three walks and two earned runs in the winning effort. Rachel Zabriskie (18-9) took the loss, going seven allowing four hits, a walk and three earned runs.
Iowa State will face Drake again Thursday in Des Moines. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
