Cyclones Fall Short At Drake, 5-2

DES MOINES, Iowa - Drake scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 5-2 win over Iowa State Thursday at Buel Field. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 22-17 this season.

After Iowa State squandered a good opportunity in the first, going scoreless despite having runners on second and third with no outs, Drake put four runs on the board in its opening at bat.

Lindsey Vande Wall and Erin Bly hit back-to-back homers in the inning while Bridget Shields added a run-scoring single.

The Cyclones got two runs back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Tori Torrescano and an infield single from Heidi Kidwell.

Drake responded with an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on Macie Silliman's single to left field to make it 5-2.

The Bulldogs (22-10) wouldn't need the run as starting pitcher Jenna DeLong (11-5) kept the Cyclones off the scoreboard over the final three innings to hand ISU its fourth-straight setback. DeLong scattered seven hits and struck out seven to pick up the win.

Torrescano (4-5) pitched just two-thirds of an inning and allowed four runs on three hits, including a pair of homers. Lauren Kennewell lasted 1.1 innings in relief, giving up four hits but no runs to keep the Cyclones in the game. Rachel Zabriskie gave up a run on three hits in four innings.

Heidi Kidwell collected three hits in four at bats to lead the Cyclones. Erica Miller added two hits for ISU, which was out hit 11-7 in the game. The Cyclones left 11 runners on base.

Shields led Drake going 3-for-3. Vande Wall, DeLong and Silliman had two hits each.

Iowa State returns to action Saturday as it opens a Big 12 series at Oklahoma State. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
