LAWRENCE, Kan. - Courtney Wray had three hits and Iowa State got solo homers from Alex Johnson and Erica Miller to defeat Kansas, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Big 12 doubleheader. The Cyclones move to 26-28 overall and 4-14 in Big 12 play.
Solo homers in the first and second innings propelled the Cyclones to a quick 2-0 lead.
Miller got things started in the top of the first with a shot down the left field line to give ISU the early one-run lead. The homer was the freshman's sixth this season.
In the second, Johnson tagged KU pitcher Allie Clark for her team-leading eighth homer this season and the 26th of her career, leaving her just one shy of Erica Martinez's school record.
KU got a run back in the bottom of the third as Johnson reached on an infield single, stole second base and came around to score on Rosie Hull's single to left field.
The Cyclones got the run back in the fourth as Wray singled and later scored on a passed ball to make it 3-1.
Kansas would respond in its half of the fourth on a run-scoring double by Sara Ramirez that brought the Cyclone lead back down to one run.
Wray again got things started in the sixth, roping a triple to left center to open the frame. The senior came in to score on a squeeze play as Sydni Jones laid down a bunt that allowed ISU to increase its lead to 4-2.
Back-to-back doubles by Amanda Jobe and Sara Ramirez to lead off the bottom of the sixth trimmed the lead back down to one at 4-3. Rachel Zabriskie relieved Tori Torrescano in the circle and was able to strand Ramirez, the tying run, at third with three-straight outs.
Zabriskie retired the Jayhawks without any trouble in the seventh to earn her third save of the season. Torrescano (5-7) picked up the win in relief of Lauren Kennewell, tossing two innings and allowing one run on four hits.
Wray led the Cyclones going 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Johnson had a pair of hits for the Cyclones as well.
Clark (8-12) suffered the loss for Kansas, allowing four runs on five hits.
The Cyclones will continue play next weekend at the Big 12 Championships.
